International Law (also referred to as the (“Law of Nations” or “Public International Law”) consists of the legally binding rules, norms, and regulations that govern the conduct of states, particularly those involving relationships among themselves, that states have collectively agreed to establish and accept. It is analogous to domestic law, which governs the relationships between peoples and between institutions within each state. Both systems of law exist in order to provide order collectively and among each other, ensuring basic uniformity of acceptable behaviour, to settle disputes, and prohibit acts deemed contrary to acceptable conduct, and punish those who violate these. These are created between the states of the world, either in a codified (written and accepted) manner, or have become over the years customary acceptable norms. To many, the term International law is seen as describing a very ineffective system, given regularly existing wars and conflicts; yet, many will be surprised to know that it has a compliance/acceptance rate quite higher than domestic law, where crimes of all nature occur widely within countries on a regular basis.
