DESCRIPTION:Thursdays at 7:30p.m.\nAugust 1\, 8 & 15 via Zoom\nThe Jewish communities of Siam and Portugal were decimated\, expelled\, and forcibly converted between 1390 and 1497. Their descendants live across the globe\, some openly as Sephardim and others hidden as conversos (Secret Jews). This three-class series will examine the surprising places these Jews can be found.  \nRabbi David Kunin graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in Medieval History and then attended the Jewish Theological Seminary of America\, where he was ordained as a Rabbi and received an MA in Judaic Studies. \nFee: $45 per series\nTo register: https://shorturl.at/UFVEk

DESCRIPTION:Join Marilyn Rolingher\, a registered psychologist\, to explore the way we age and to learn a few techniques to keep us active. \nMonday\, August 19 at 1p.m. \nThis session will be focused on new discoveries in psychology as they pertain to aging.  We will look at the current research from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other groups about aging smarter. We will look at how one’s thinking can affect not only their mental health but also their longevity. \nWe will also focus on redefining our meaning of life as we age and looking at how loss creates a vicious cycle of negativity that can lead to social isolation and a downward spiral in our mental & physical health.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Ikebana
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 29th @ 12pm\nIkebana is one of the representative aspects of Japanese traditional culture\, and ikebana began with Ikenobo in 1462. \nIn the mid-16th century Senno Ikenobo taught\, “Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life\, and each has its own beauty. By arranging flowers with reverence\, one refines oneself.” \n \nArranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers – these are linked to a heart that values nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana. \nIn Japan the study of ikebana is a lifetime practice. In this presentation participants will be offered a brief introduction to the basic philosophy and principles of ikebana and given the opportunity to make a small freestyle arrangement to take home.  Information about joining the ongoing ikebana classes will also be provided. \nBrenda Jackson teaches with the Ikenobo Edmonton Study Group. Brenda started studying Ikebana while teaching in the Okanagan and has continued her studies with the Ikenobo school through lessons and workshops in Vernon\, Vancouver\, San Francisco\, Switzerland\, Illinois\, Edmonton and Japan. Brenda teaches classes at the Jewish Senior Citizen’s Centre and assists with the operation of the Ikenobo Edmonton Study group which also offers classes at the Edmonton Japanese Community Association. Brenda is a certified teacher with the Ikenobo School of Ikebana.
